Funny stories from around the world

May 27, 2008

Here are some more funny and bizarre stories from around the world, always great for sermon illustrations:

Cannabis blunder at Tokyo airport: An passenger arriving at Japan’s Narita airport has received 142g of cannabis after a customs test went wrong.  A customs officer hid a package of the banned substance in a side pocket of a randomly chosen suitcase in order to test airport security.  Sniffer dogs failed to detect the cannabis and the officer could not remember which bag he had put it in.

Village welcomes shopper donkeys: Donkeys arrive at a remote village to help residents fed up with hauling their shopping up a steep hill.

Cat and mouse blamed for blackout: Albania’s main electricity provider blames a cat chasing a mouse for a 72-hour blackout.

Cheese racers in steep challenge: Dozens of competitors have been hurling themselves down a steep hill in a perilous annual cheese-rolling event in Gloucestershire.

Jump record fails to take flight: A French skydiver’s attempt to break the world free fall record failed to get off the ground when his balloon lifted off without him on board.

Women breach all-male Greek site: Four Moldovan women accidentally breached a ban dating back to 1060 when they were dropped off on the Greek monastic peninsula of Mount Athos.  They told police they had sailed from Turkey after paying $6,300 to two Ukrainian people smugglers, but were unaware they were breaking Greek law.

Priceless ceramic kept under bed: A “priceless” 17th Century artwork is going on display after spending the last 30 years under a farmer’s bed.
