Chris Hoy is Sports Personality of the Year

Hoy races past Hamilton to be crowned sports personality:

Chris Hoy landed the most unexpected and stunning win of his sporting year last night as he was crowned the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. His triumph came in the most hotly contested edition of the award in its 55-year history. Hoy edged Lewis Hamilton into second place, with swimming heroine Rebecca Adlington third.

I am surprised but pleased.  For me it always had to be Hamilton or Hoy, and I’d said it should be Hoy.  His achievement is amazing – to get 3 gold medals in one Olympics is outstanding, and he is the most successful male Olympic cyclist ever.  Hamilton

I loved what RebeccaAdlington said about him:

“I’m just so happy for Chris. He deserved it… It’s such an honour just to know Chris. His attitude is utterly professional and he’s a really nice person and fantastic role model too.”

The night was all about the Olympics with Ellie Simmonds, who won two swimming gold medals aged 13 at the Paralympics, as the Young Sports Personality of the Year; and Usain Bolt won the Overseas Sports Personality of the Year award for his amazing 100 metres and 200m double Olympic gold achievements in world record times.

A lovely touch was the Lifetime Achievement award which was awarded to Sir Bobby Charlton by his brother Jack with emotional speeches.

  1. I also love that Chris Hoy won this award. I think Lewis Hamilton is great but he’ll have his time again. My thinking is that if a multi-gold medal winning olympian can’t win in an olympic year, then when can he?
Always a good night’s viewing on the tv (despite Jess moaning every 5 minutes cos she thought it was boring!!!! Teenage girls!)
Hope you’re all OK and looking forward to Christmas!

  2. An Olympian always wins in an Olympic year. If Hamilton wins the F1 again he’ll win the award by a landslide next year because his only competition will probably be a horse :)
