Last night I attended two very different meetings: firstly a Youth Association meeting for those in the Voluntary Youth Sector in the Tonbridge and Malling area. It was the first time this group got together, and there was a small number of people (about a dozen) who came from 4 different voluntary organisations. A couple of points from it:
- Most of the people there were either based in churches or in Girls Brigade: the church and church related organisations are crucial in the provision of youth work.
- There was a clear passion to come together to share ideas and resources.
- This has the potential to be a group that isn’t based around the latest policy initiative but that manages to bridge the gap between the government speak that is found in some meetings I attend, and the lack of knowledge and understanding from voluntary organisations in others – that is really exciting.
The second meeting was a Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades Captains and Section Leaders meeting – as always with these kind of meetings there seemed to be masses of items on the agenda, but the underlying point I took away from it, is that things are bit by bit developing and growing.
It is an exciting time to be involved in children’s and youth work in the Tonbridge area, positive change seems to be happening.
