John Ortberg’s The Life You’ve Always Wanted is a look at spiritual disciplines. Unlike most books on spiritual disciplines it doesn’t just look at the classic issues of reading scripture, or spending time in prayer, but looks at crucial issues such as the need to slow down, and the experience of suffering.
His book is straightforward to read, full of helpful tips, and an encouragement to persevere at these disciplines that so many people find hard. It was the first book I’ve read by Ortberg, but it certainly won’t be the last. For me this was probably the best book I’ve read on spiritual disciplines and habits.
