Bono’s top ten suggestions for the next decade
Bono has written an interesting article for the New York Times making ten suggestions for the next ten years.
His suggestions certainly surprised me, as he writes:
Here, then, are 10 ideas that might make the next 10 years more interesting, healthy or civil. Some are trivial, some fundamental. They have little in common with one another except that I am seized by each, and moved by its potential to change our world.
They certainly are logically linked, they’re just his random thoughts, what do you think of his suggestions?

Thought for youth band
Dan, one of our Ministry Apprentices is in the process of developing a youth band. A couple of weeks ago they started regular rehearsals, and tonight I popped in to share a quick thought with them. I thought my notes might be of interest to you:
- We want perfection – people need a strong, clear lead, but we want perfection because it is the minimum we should offer in worship.
- But this is not at the expense of our heart – we must be worshippers to lead others in worship.
- Check out Luke 10:38-43
- Mary & Martha – Martha wasn’t wrong in giving hospitality, she was wrong to let it dominate her. It’s important to stop and sit at the feet of our Lord.
- You must go with what you believe God is leading you to do – both corporately and individually.
They’re an amazing set of young people and I’m really looking forward to seeing how they develop as a band.

Giant Guitar Hero via Footballs
Kasabian, the British rock group have made an interesting video. It begins with craftsmen creating enormous buttons on the wall of a London warehouse. These and additional visual effects make a giant version of Guitar Hero. Participants play by kicking soccer balls at the buttons in the right order to the tune of one of Kasabian’s songs:

War Child
I love the War Child singles. The charity uses profit from music to raise the issue of child soldiers, the effects of war, and the work War Child does with children in Iraq, Afghanistan, DRC and Uganda to name a few places.
The song is based on the memorable Killers line “I got soul, but I’m not a soldier” and all the artists recording it are big names my young people would listen to.

Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson has been top of the headlines for the last ten days. Dead at the age of 50, a man who seemingly had everything the world could offer, except the security that a relationship with God can bring.
Whilst I was at Exeter University, through his friendship with Uri Geller, he joined the board of Exeter City as a honorary director, which included a visit to the stadium which turbed the city upside down.
It is hard to think of a sadder public figure in recent years. A man who struggled with his identity. He seemed to be a very confused man.
I think my key thought is what would have happened if someone had protected him, parented him, challenged him, loved him, encouraged him to feel secure. As a society, to some degree, we failed him.

US mum is guilty of file-sharing
The news today has been full of the story of the US mum who’s been found guilty of file-sharing. She has been ordered to pay $1.9 million (£1.2m) in the only file-sharing case to go to trial in the US.
To me the fine seems to be so out of this world, I understand she’s done wrong and needs to pay a punishment, but I don’t understand why it is $1.9 million, that does seem excessive, and she’ll never be able to pay it.
Jammie Thomas-Rasset, 32, mother of four from Minnesota was accused of illegally sharing 24 songs from artists including Sheryl Crow and Green Day.
Outside the courtroom Thomas-Rasset said the damages were “ridiculous”.
A spokeswoman for the Recording Industry Association of America said the companies were willing to settle out of court for a much smaller amount.
Most people targeted by the music industry had settled for around £1,500 each.
Record companies accused Thomas-Rasset of uploading 1,700 songs to the Kazaa file-sharing site before it became a legal service.
