Stewart Downing has confirmed he expects to leave Liverpool in January after being told he has no long-term future at the club.

The 28-year has struggled to impress since his £20 million move from Aston Villa in the summer of 2011 and under Rodgers reign, the England international is struggling to find a place in the starting XI.

He told reporters:

“The manager has said I can leave if I want to. I think it’s just the nature of football, the old cliche about it being a funny old game is true.  I’ve played for a long time and there are spells when you can be in and out of any side. At the minute I’m trying to play as much as possible.  If that doesn’t happen I am at an age where I cannot be sat around. I need to play and the manager understands that.”

Downing has done reasonably well in his new left back position and was one of Liverpool’s better performers for last weekend’s loss against Aston Villa.  Does that mean if we were to sell him we would want to sign another left back for backup.

What do you think, should Liverpool try and keep him as a cover for Enrique for the rest of the season or should he be shipped out in the January market?
