Some random thoughts from the France 0 – 2 Italy result:

  • France were unlucky on the night, but overall they have got exactly what they deserved.  They have not really got going in the three games and it is no surprise that they are going home.
  • Italy don’t particularly deserve to go through either, but that’s the way it is.  They can thank Gianluigi Buffon that they have made it through.
  • It was an excellent penalty from Andrea Pirlo – under big pressure – to give Italy the vital lead they needed.
  • France is going to need a clearout.  We shouldn’t see Lilian Thuram, Patrick Vieira (albeit he hasn’t played at this tournament), Claude Makelele, and Thierry Henry in an international shirt again.
  • Thierry Henry was unlucky to divert the free kick into the goal.
  • Domenech played it too safe, sacrificing innovation and talent and promoting the status quo with players like Sagnol, Thuram, Malouda, and Toulalan.  It is the oldest team and they looked creaky.
