Centre back Daniel Agger scored the only goal of the match which ensured Liverpool returned to winning ways at home to Southampton.
The Reds controlled the first half of the match but had to wait for the goal as the woodwork denied them twice before Agger found the net.
It was Liverpool’s third home win of the season and first back to back league wins at Anfield since September 2011, Brendan Rodgers said:
“I thought we were outstanding in the first-half, the tempo and we shift the ball and everyone was passing and moving and the creativity was there. Throughout the game, it’s just that little bit of luck with the final ball, and no matter how much you dominate the game, if it’s still only 1-0 going into the final 10 minutes, it’s always going to offer you that wee bit of challenge and you’ve got to defend. Absolutely no question we should have been out of sight [at half-time].”
Meanwhile midfielder Lucas Leiva was back in the Liverpool line-up for the first time since August and Rodgers expressed his delight to see the 25 year old back in the starting line-up. He said:
“I thought he was excellent; in my mind, he’s come so far in training and I felt I needed to get him into one of the games and he’s another piece to what we want to do here and you can see the difference he makes when he is in the team.”
