I was reading that 2012 is to be Michael Phelps’ last Olympics, he’ll be 27 then, and by the age of 30 he expects to have retired from swimming. I understand that he’s already the most prolific Olympic gold medallist of all time and that being a professional sportsman is a short-term career, but I still find it amazing to think that someone can retire from their primary role by the age of 30.
I work as youth leader, I love being a youth leader, I can’t really imagine what I’d do after that, let alone retiring in four years time when I’m thirty. I’m someone who likes to do something, who likes to make a difference, and can’t imagine what I’d do for the next 60 years or so.
