Terry Virgo’s book From Refreshing to Revival is a response to the Toronto Experience (from the Toronto Vineyard Fellowship [now Toronto Airport Church] in 1994). It came over to the UK in the summer of 1994 and on into 1995, dubbed ‘The Toronto Blessing’ by The Daily Telegraph. Hotbeds were HTB (Nicky Gumbel, Ken Costa and Sandy Millar), Sunderland Christian Centre (Ken and Lois Gott), Queens Road Baptist Church (Rob Warner- EA, Baptist Union), Church of Christ the King in Brighton (Terry Virgo, New Frontiers) and Pioneer People Church in Cobham (Gerald Coates’). A number of key UK church leaders came out heavily in favour stressing that this was a major move of God and a prelude to national and global revival.
The book is written to help people recognise what is actually happening when people meet with the Holy Spirit; secondly, to reflect on how ministry time (space given over in the service for the Holy Spirit’s activity) should be administered and led; and thirdly, how do we look towards a full-scale revival (which never happened in the UK).
In many ways the book is out of date, but it was interesting to read in the light of the more recent Lakeland revivals.
