I was privileged to attend the book launch for In His Image by Andy Matheson.  Andy is the International Director of Oasis and a genuine expert on poverty.  So often we can be overwhelmed by statistics around poverty, and yet unsure what we can do to help; we might try giving money, food, or clothes but still are unsure as to what difference it actually makes.

Andy argues that we need to start with the view that all people  are made in God’s image. God calls us to meet with the poor not primarily to offer services or to develop programs, but to develop relationships and to show God’s love.  The book highlights the need for a holistic approach when caring for those in need, offering practical suggestions backed by both biblical and academic research.  Chapters on Empowerment and Receiving (as opposed to just feeling we have solutions to ‘dish-out’) were particularly powerful.

It is amazingly readable for such a difficult subject.  I will be recommending it and I hope it influences many.

Married to the amazing Sarah and raising Jakey, Daniel, Amelia, Josh & Jonah in our blended family. Passionate for Jesus, social work & sport.
