Over the last decade there has been an increasing public perception that young people are apathetic, uncommitted and irresponsible yobs. Summer 2011 with the riots only allowed the media to develop this, even though the majority of crimes were committed by young adults (those over 18 years old) not young people.
To contradict this, Gavin and Simeon in Lazy, Antisocial and Selfish? present twelve groups of real young people, and the adults who helped to form, nurture and develop them. These are real stories about young people, who in today’s society are often seen as uncaring and mindless, even frightening, and certainly not associated with Church. These stories with accompanying comments and thoughts, highlight the difficulties some young people certainly do have, but how they can overcome them and not only help themselves, but also serve the Church and society.
Not a “how to” youth work book, but one to inspire a tired and frustrated youth worker or to encourage someone to believe youth work is worth the effort and money.
