It was with interest that I read The Church that Went Under by Julia Cameron. This was a record of the building project that St Nicholas in Sevenoaks undertook to dig under the church to provide more space and better facilities for the church and community groups. The book is a wonderful record of the struggles of an Anglican major building project – dealing with the Borough Council, the Diocese, local community groups and English Heritage to name a few. What is clear though, this long-term project came from the vision to be a relevant and inspiring church in a commuter town – a church trying to be Jesus in their local community.
