The Italian FA has confirmed on its website that the Reds striker Fabio Borini has suffered a fractured right foot while away with their U21 side.

If there are no major complications, it will mean that the 21 year old is likely to miss between six and eight weeks recovering.

An MRI scan on Thursday revealed the full extent of the injury, the Liverpool striker has fractured the scaphoid bone in his right foot and will miss the playoffs with Sweden.

The decision to let Andy Carroll join West Ham United on loan before the summer transfer deadline has rebounded spectacularly on the Liverpool manager, with the refusal of the club’s owners to meet Fulham’s valuation of Clint Dempsey, and now Borini’s injury, leaving Luis Suárez as his only established striker.  The injury may allow youngster Adam Morgan some first team action in the coming weeks.
