Liverpool football club have confirmed captain Steven Gerrard will miss the final two matches of the current premier league season.

Gerrard will be undergoing surgery on his left shoulder and will sit out the Reds’ trip to Fulham on Sunday and next weekend’s match against Queens Park Rangers.

The 32 year old is also set to miss England’s post-season friendly matches against Republic of Ireland at Wembley and Brazil in Rio de Janeiro.  A club statement confirmed:

“Liverpool have confirmed Steven Gerrard will undergo surgery on a recurrent shoulder problem this week.  The captain’s injury has progressively worsened in recent weeks and requires an operation to cure it.  Gerrard will now miss the final two games of 2012-13, but he is expected to be fit for the start of pre-season.”
