Liverpool shot stopper Pepe Reina is to be loaned out to Italian side Napoli next season where he’ll be reunited with former Reds manager Rafael Benitez.
The 30-year-old who joined Liverpool in 2005 from Villarreal is one of the clubs most senior member and Inspirational figure.
Youth team goalkeeper Danny Ward has flown to join Liverpool’s tour of Australia to provide back-up to Mignolet and Brad Jones.
Rodgers told reporters:
“Financially it was something that we needed to look at. That would be the reason (to move Reina) as you wouldn’t move on a top goalkeeper. It (the situation) reared its head over the last couple of months and I had to prepare by bringing in another keeper. Pepe is a good guy. I’ve a lot of time for him, and he understands what I want to do totally. He’s got a big season ahead because it’s a World Cup year and one where, if he wasn’t going to be playing, could severely harm his chances of going.”
It is thought Liverpool will have an option to call back Reina from the loan spell in case of an Injury to current keeper Simon Mignolet. So the deal will be the best for all involved.
